Flow: Stop Scrolling and Start Rolling

Sometimes when situations in life feel like an uphill battle we just need to roll…down…the hill.

Taking the easier route tends to get a bad reputation. How could it not when we are living at the height of convenience? We are a far cry from being hunters and gathers. Instead of berries and meat, we hunt for instant-gratification and gather likes, perhaps even while sitting on the toilet and no one would be the wiser.

Digital entertainment, the siren of the 21st century, has become an over-stimulative-ever-expansive-money-making-machine of convenience that demands every free minute of our time. Groceries at the push of a button? Sure. Want to start a relationship? Here are 30 apps! Want to end a relationship? Just “ghost” them. Our immersion into the world of digital entertainment has us so deeply submerged that we continuously scroll right past the pause or stop button of our day-to-day lives. We are so beholden to this unrealistic continuous overstimulated way of living that we are stabbed with guilt at the idea of putting activities or situations on pause. We actually expect our mind, body, and spirit or vitality to fully function when our minds are going 100 mph. But something always gives. I don’t think I’m asking for too much when I want to have full say in what that something is. Ironically, convenience has inconveniently scattered our lives.

Regardless of what active standard we hold ourselves to, taking the time to consider whether something does or does not serve you anymore can make a world of a difference. Being aware of when to roll down a hill is challenging no doubt. After all, society praises persistence and determination! Blood-sweat-and tears! But there is a boundary and a limit to what we singularly, in our fragile and yet miraculously resilient bodies, can offer a situation. Though we may feel like it, we are not martyrs. And though we don’t realize it, a sacrifice should mutually benefit both parties. And though we may have been taught differently, no one can look out for us better than we can look after ourselves.

We have to PAY ATTENTION to how we live our lives. There are times where I find myself sinking in a sea of to-do’s only to reach out and grasp for the inquiry: Is this situation serving me? Which can expand to: Am I receiving mutual benefits for my efforts? Is this helping or hurting me? What do I have to sacrifice and is it worth it? Can I wait?

Are you sinking in a sea of to-dos? This is where rolling down the hill works to your advantage. Taking the easier route gets a bad reputation, but doesn’t it feel counterintuitive to maintain a situation that no longer serves you? So stop or pause. If we let things fall away, that’s where the reprieve starts. If you are willing to sit in it long enough, what I find to be true is that fresh ideas, new opportunities, and solutions follow quickly behind.

Cease your scrolling and roll down the hill. Let that momentum take you to a place of clarity and flow, the tag destination you forgot to put on your top 5 list.

I’ll also admit that rather than climbing a hill, many situations can feel more like a boat ride that may retreat, take a detour, only to move forward when the timing or circumstances feels more right, perhaps because of a blessing in disguise.

To roll down the hill here is an activity that can serve you in your journey:

  • Recognize and acknowledge the activity(s)/area(s) of life that feel like an uphill battle and…
    1. let them go
    2. pull back
    3. or stop trying
  • Implement one idea/intention to that activity/area that feels…
    1. lighter
    2. easier
    3. or more natural

Write it down and give it a go.
